Samuel Barrett, youngest child of George and Martha
Samuel was born 26th April, 1863 on Feltwell Fen and was baptised 16th June, 1867 at the Brandon Creek Primitive Methodist Chapel, the same day as his sister Rachel.
His mother died before he was twelve years old and the family appeared to break up, as his father was living in a public house in Southery in 1881. His sister Rachel had gone to Nottingham and Samuel eventually went there as well.
He married Keziah Southwell of Benwick, Cambridgeshire on 16th March, 1884 at St. Saviour's, Nottingham and for a time they lived at Sneinton, Nottingham. Their only son Albert Samuel was born at Nottingham on 14th July, 1890. Soon afterwards he moved to Shardlow in Derbyshire and was employed as a joiners machinist by Messrs. W.E. Ellis Ltd. He lived in Wilne Road and later in Ivy House on the wharf at Shardlow.
He worked for Ellis's for 40 years during which time he was honorary treasurer of Shardlow Brass Band from it's inception in 1898, honorary treasurer of the United Methodist Church, Wilne and a member of the Shardlow Fire Brigade. Samuel died 28th November, 1930 and Keziah died 28th May, 1934, both being buried in the same grave in Shardlow Churchyard.
Their son Albert Samuel Barrett also worked as a joiner for Ellis's at Shardlow and was twice married. His first wife, Jennie Pick, whom he married in 1919 died giving birth to their son in September, 1922. The child only lived seven months and was buried in the same grave as the mother in Shardlow Churchyard.
Albert Samuel married Sarah Elizabeth Bird at Shardlow on 27th March, 1937 and they lived at Ivy House and later at 16, West End Drive, Shardlow. They had one daughter, Mavis, now Mrs. Roadley, who works in a Derby solicitor's office and lives in Allestree and one son, Trevor, who is a design engineer for Rolls Royce.
Albert Samuel was a cornet player in Shardlow Brass Band, organist at Shardlow Parish Church for 39 years and organist at Wilne Chapel for 22 years. He died 18th July, 1977, five years after his second wife, and was buried in Shardlow Churchyard.
