William James STOCK
| William James STOCK, Private, No 4745, 1st Battalion The Suffolk Regiment. Resident of Cambridge, served in Cambridgeshire Territorial Regiment which was allied to the 1st Battalion Suffolk Regiment killed in action 6th January 1900 aged 20 at Colesberg (Suffolk Hill). Buried Colesberg (Suffolk Hill).
Born 7th October 1879, at 43 Adam & Eve Row, Cambridge, son of Fred and Caroline (nee Mulberry) Stock. Eldest of four children, two boys and two girls. The youngest daughter was Bertha Ann STOCK, born 1st February 1886 at 36 Adam & Eve Row, Cambridge. Fred Stock was a grrom working in Cambridge until he sustained a serious injury when a horse kicked him. He later died from his injuries at the early age of 34, in 1890. This left his widow, Caroline to raise the four children. William began his working life as a chef at Jesus College, Cambridge. He was a keen sportsman and his ambition was to travel, so he joined the Army. He was posted to Gibraltar and Malta before being finally posted to South Africa in October 1899 following the outbreak of the Boer War. |
